Public EV charging infrastructure is growing, but demand often outpaces supply at popular locations. Following a few unwritten rules makes the shared charging experience smoother for everyone and reduces the frustration that comes with finding occupied stations when you need a charge.
Move When Done
Once your vehicle reaches your target charge level, move it promptly to free the charger for the next driver. Sitting at a charger after your session ends blocks access for others who may genuinely need the charge. Some networks now charge idle fees after the session completes, which provides a financial incentive to move. Set a phone alert for when your charge is nearly complete so you can return to your vehicle on time.
Do Not Unplug Others
Never disconnect another vehicle from a charger, even if it appears to be fully charged. The owner may have a specific charge target or may be monitoring remotely. Many vehicles lock the charge cable during an active session anyway. If all chargers are occupied and you are waiting, check whether any vehicles appear to be finished charging and wait nearby rather than interfering with hardware that does not belong to you.
Use the Right Charger for Your Needs
If you only need a quick top-up and there are limited fast chargers, consider using a Level 2 charger instead. Conversely, if you need a substantial charge and Level 2 stations are all open, do not occupy a fast charger for a small top-up. Match your charging choice to your actual need and the availability at that location.
Be Patient with New EV Owners
Everyone was new to EV charging at some point. If someone is struggling with a charger, offer help politely. The charging process can be confusing with different connector types, apps, and payment methods. A brief, friendly explanation goes a long way toward making the EV community welcoming.
Keep the Area Clean
Coil cables neatly after use. Do not leave trash at charging stations. Report damaged or non-functional chargers through the network app. Treating shared infrastructure with care ensures it remains functional and pleasant for everyone. The EV community benefits from cooperation, and simple courtesy at the charger makes the experience better for all drivers.
